Glad to hear it worked out. Hopefully we will be able to do the same using NetBackup Replication Director soon. If this slide from a Sym Vision 2012 presentation is anything to go by, then we should have this feature in the version after 7.6. (VMware Exchange gets it sooner.) Shouldn't be too many years from now.

I agree with PKH, a backup job basically does an imbedded inventory job to make sure the media in the drive is correct/usable before it starts.  So, doing a manual inventory before a backup should not be needed.

Is the "Web Garden" option supported? I was thinking about increasing it to 4 for both the TaskManagement and Altiris-NS-Agent app pools since then seem to work the hardest. I have also noticed in the Classic.NET AppPool that /Altiris/PuggableProtocols/NSAccess/NSAccess.aspx is very active. It might make sense to move this into its own App Pool.
