This issue has been solved. See solution.

I'm running Altiris 7.1 for reporting.  I have the agent on about 35 machines and growing.  My boss would like to be able to do a search for a file name and see the results.

Under reports I went to Discovery and Inventory, Inventory, Cross-Platform, Software/Applications, General Software, and Audit Software Search Report.  I type in regedit.exe for a test.  0 results...  If I go to software and installed software I have hundreds of results from the machines that have been inventoried.  Why isn't this working?

You need to make sure you have the Software inventory turned on too and that it has run. I clone the built in policies and edit them to suit. Look in advanced for the exclusions.

Under actions, Inventory, agent based; I then go to Policies, Discovery and Inventory, Inventory, and Collect Full Inventory.  That is enabled to run on a daily schedule.  Hardware is greyed out, but software and file properties are checked.

I see the exclusions, there are tons listed.  I didn't see program files listed.  I tried Outlook.exe and saw results.  Thanks.
